Winter meetings issue 2: Changing the weekly moves

Here is how we will do this. I will put up a post about a topic up for discussion along with a poll to the post and keep that open for a couple days until the vote is decided.

Today's topic: Raising the weekly moves from 2 to 3

Last year, we dropped the moves from four to two. I think everyone agreed that four was too many per week. However, there has been some concern that two was, well, too few.

So here is issue 2 of the Winter Meetings, raising the weekly moves from two to three. This is pretty self-explanatory, so I'm not going to go in-depth of the pros and cons of each one. I think most of you should know them by now.

Pros: It allows for a little more flexibility per week, especially when it comes to dealing with injuries. Two moves was not enough last year, and it didn't allow managers to properly manage their teams.

Cons: It opens the door for more stiffing, which last year did not seem to be a problem at all with the league. If you wanted to stiff on a Saturday night, you had to wisely use your other move during the week.

Change needed: Eight votes

If there is more to be added to either argument, please comment and let your voice be heard. Remember, you can only vote once. Use it wisely.

  1. I'd like to request an alteration to this poll. I personally thought 2 was extremely low and hindered the league. Everything was depedent upon the draft and frankly what fun is a league when you can't pick people up and we're all too stubborn to trade (especially with the keeper rules).

I'd like 4 moves per week. It's 10% of the max in the league and gives a manager a little more flexibility when trying to gut out a win when necessary. I had situations (and we all did) last year where 3-4 people were on the DL...some in the same week...and I couldn't pick people up to even fill a full roster. With that being said...if you have 4 people you can drop on a whim your team probably sucks anyways...so you're most likely not going to make the playoffs.

I hope this can facilitate some discussion. We overreacted last year with 2 pickups per week and shouldn't make the same mistake because of our shortsighted move.

What about the manager that cuts a guy on Sunday the previous week to get a two-start pitcher, then someone else on Monday to get 4 extra starts in a week. Then he still has two moves left to use to get an extra two starts on Sunday? That's an additional 6 starts from pitching if you play it right. That's excessive in my mind and not the point of fantasy baseball.

If it were fantasy stiffing, you'd be the champ.

  3. Let's not overreact and jump from 2 to 4 moves. I think that would be a mistake based on shortsighted nature and a failure to account for the stiffing referenced directly above.

  4. I think we should try out 3 and see how it goes, 2 is obviously way too low and 4 seems like it could allow for stiffing. We haven't tried 3 yet, so I say we do 3 and see how it goes. If it seems like it's too low, then we can re-asses next year, I just think 2 was absolutely ridiculous. There are just too many injuries in baseball.

  6. I thought two moves per week was fine and I'm not sure that I see the logic in two moves per week making the league "dependent upon the draft." Isn't every league dependent upon the draft?

I think having three moves per week allows for stiffing to come into play. With that said, I think there is clearly a grey area on where the line is drawn between strategy and stiffing, but in my opinion, two moves per week leaves it closer to the side of strategy.

While injuries are a valid reason to want more weekly moves, I'd rather increase the number of DL spots than the number of moves. Or for that matter, just add an extra bench spot.
