Random draft musings and observations

1) Thumbs up for everyone. From the quick (for us) draft to zero no-shows or early exits, it was a quality draft.

2) Thumbs down for Andy, who called a 30-second timeout for no good reason after mixing up two teams.

3) Hal was the only person to not say a single word more than two sentences during the draft. Cats got your fingers?

4) "How come the draft order is wrong?" was asked at least three different times. Really, guys? Seven years and counting now.

5) The main three Republicans were awfully silent tonight on the politics front, making it the first draft since Football '09 we haven't heard them pipe up. Wonder why?

6) Rick used the 3rd overall pick on a catcher despite having a keeper catcher and despite having a keeper pitcher who might be in the bullpen by May.

7) Dave taking the two Japanese guys back-to-back late just to fill his team name quota was reminiscent of when Shea used to take Shea Hillenbrand.

8) Speaking of Shea, he took Hanley Ramirez to stash for a couple months. But then he didn't take another shortstop...

9) Bob has just three guys with more than 15 HRs in 2012, one of whom was a keeper. He does not have anyone with 100+ RBIs, 100 runs or an OPS above .841 last season.

10) Adam questioned why he lost a draft pick, despite it being the fourth year it's happened to him, which is a league-high.

11) Hal does not have a starter with an ERA last year under 3.47 (min. 100 IP)

12) This will be the sixth straight year Jack has Troy Tulowitzki. If Jack signs him to a max 3-year contract, he'll have him for the better part of an entire decade.

13) Chris, Ken, Rick and Mike all passed in the first round on the "best available player" according to Yahoo.

14) Chris, however, did take the best overall pitcher with the top pick. Ken did not take the best available hitter with the No. 2 overall pick.

15) Joe drafted four players from the Big Apple after he started giving advice on Apple stock.

  1. Nice job commish on the summary.

A few follow ups to the two that affect me, you are right no political talk last night - the people have spoken. We have to accept it, and live to continue to make gains in the House and Senate and hopefully regain the White House in 2016.

As to Tulo, lets say negotiations are underway. Troy and his team and our front office are looking at the possible expansion of a 4th keeper with greater interest now.

Great draft last night, very impressive on the speed!

  2. Correction: While Schea was inexplicably talking in the draft chat room while on the clock with under 30 seconds left for his 11th round pick, I did say "Less talking, more drafting!"

  3. That is true, I remember that from Hal.

Well done Andy, except that timeout call. Good to have baseball back.
