In a somewhat surprising move Wednesday, Richie resigned as a manager in the MTL Keeper League. He becomes the first manager in league history to be replaced.
Richie had success in his first year, nearly winning a division title, but it went downhill from there. It culminated in a last-place finish in 2009, where he had to pay the last-place fee. When contacted by the MTL blog, Richie admitted the last-place fee and this year's raised entry fee had something to do with the resignation.
"I'm out of the league," he wrote in a text message Wednesday night. "Two (sic) much money."
Richie simply could not handle the fantasy baseball big boys. He was overmatched for much of his career, both on and off the field. Richie finished with a 25-41 record over his three-year career, and several of his trades were disasters, ripped unanimously throughout the league. Worse than some of his trades, however, were his keeper decisions. Who will ever forget the Justin Upton choice two years ago?
Said one manager: "We're going to miss him. Not his personality or league activity, but the ability to trade with him."
The move is somewhat surprising because he had just finished a trade-deadline move that gave him some hope heading into the 2010 season. He would have had Roy Oswalt (1), Jose Reyes (1) and Justin Upton (1) heading into next year.
The search to replace him will begin immediately.
