Topic 2: Max weekly moves

Welcome back to Day 2 of the Winter Meetings. I suspect this topic will elicit a lot of discussion and debate, so it's absolutely essential you check back every so often to make your voice heard/hear other arguments.

This may be the most highly debated topic: Max weekly moves.

Current status: Four acquisitions per week.

Proposed change: Decreasing that to two or three per week.

Why: Some people believe that stiffing (the art of picking up a player, usually a pitcher, to get an advantage in certain categories) plays too prominent a role in the outcome of matches, especially with the one-win head-to-head system we have in place.

Some say there is no need to make four transactions in a single week other than to stiff.

Others argue that stiffing is part of the game, and part of the strategy. It adds intrigue and late-night drama to see who will match whom.

If the league votes to change to two or three, we will have another vote to see which one.

If there is more to be added to either argument, please comment and let your voice be heard.

Change needed: Eight votes

Remember, you can only vote once. Use it wisely.

Should we decrease the max weekly moves from 4 to 2-3?
Yes, change it
No, keep it

  1. I don't have a problem with a max/min moves during the regular season; however, is there any way to limit transactions during the playoffs? As it stands now, entire pitch staffs can be dropped and replaced.

  2. I will not try and act like I have never stiffed in the past, none of us can, we have all done it. However, 4 moves a week is absolutely unnecessary. If you have a flex spot or 2 on your roster than fine, use it to your advantage vs. that specific opponent that week (i.e., if your going against a guy with only hold pitchers, use your flex to try and counter that). Too often it just comes down to someone picking up SP's that get a bunch of extra innings, K's, Wins and ultimately forcing the other manager to react. While this may be thought of as "strategy" going into a matchup, it only highlights that manager's weakness that year and inability to manage his team successfully. If the argument arises that "this is the only way I can compete against better teams" than I give an emphatic "F*!@ you" right back. What it comes down to is a crappier team using this unfair advantage and beating a superior team that either: managed better, had a better draft or made better pickups. Similarly, the "I had a bad draft, or I wasn't there for the draft" excuse is lame and weak as support for maintaining 4 moves; you have the entire season to make moves, trades, and pickup players that change rosters (these sorts of players exist EVERY year and help teams significantly). Overall, the "intrigue" of seeing who can stay up the latest or make moves right before the 3 am deadline is far outweighed by the negative reprecussions and hostility generated.

Clearly I am against 4 moves and in fact think it should be limited to 2. If a guy on your team gets injured, ok use a move and drop him. If a player is on a streak that week, ok use a move and get him. This will lead to managers being more cautious in who they add, doing more research, thinking things out more and leading to ultimately fairer outcomes, both in the regular season and playoffs.

  3. Re: Dave - Playoffs is also 4 per week as of now, just like the regular season. We aren't able to make one different than the other.
