Jack wants to cut a keeper

About a month ago, we had our first petition to cut a keeper.

Now, we have another one. Jack is petitioning the league to cut Jake Peavy, who has a detached right shoulder muscle and "hopes to be throwing again by spring training," according to the Associated Press.

Our league rules can be read here so you can see the only circumstances we allow for a keeper to be cut.

After the jump, read Jack's petition to the league, and then e-mail me, comment or tell me in some form what your vote is. Majority rules.

Feel free to comment to create a discussion if you are unsure of what is going on here.

Jack's request:

I want to petition to cut Peavy without penalty.

1) He is officially done for the season.

2) This is the last year of his keeper contract and I can not resign him and he must be put back into the pool next year.

These circumstances necessitate this request.

  2. sorry had a typo in there so that the comment made no sense. First, I read the mitigating circumstance provision as still requiring a league vote no matter what the circumstance may be. Thus I never see any situation in which a circumstance "necessitates" the other managers act a certain way, and as a result, each manager still can vote whatever way they want just based on what they think. I think this is something that was absolutely missed the last time a petition was made and should be clarified this time around. That's just my reading of it though...

    Second, what is the extent of the injury. I understand season ending, but how long will he be out for in terms of surgery and recovery time?

  3. Chris;

    I did not ever state that the injury necessitated other managers to act in a certain way. What I wrote was that "These circumstances necessitate this request". I am the one making the request and thus facts and circumstances necessitated it for me - and me alone - to make the request. Other owners can't make the request and making the request was the context in which necessitate was used.

    As to your questions, he has something (a muscle I believe) in his shoulder torn from the bone, surgery is required to repair and he hopes to be throwing by Spring Training which is February/March 2011. I read something online that a doctor said he would be lucky to be pitching in competition before next year's All Star game.

    If these facts and circumstances are not what the possibility of cutting a keeper fit into - then I don't know what does;

    1) He is done for the season, surgery - and in no case will be back before the end of the season.

    2) His contract is up at the end of this season.

    3) His contract can not be renewed by me given our rules for how many seasons a keeper can be out of the pool.

    I understand that the rules remain subjective and that no owner has to vote, let alone vote in favor - but I submit, if not these facts and circumstances then what facts and circumstances would allow a keeper to be cut?

  5. I vote in favor of the request just like the last time this happened. We really need to clarify this rule in the offseason, if not immediately. There's obviously disagreement as to how this rule applies and there are certainly scenarios that it doesn't address.

  6. taking a literal reading of the rule, peavy fits the bill. i think he can be cut.
