Welcome to the 2012 Winter Meetings. Unlike past years we are going to have to do the voting a little differently because we have people who find this blog somehow through google and can screw up voting if it's public.
We will discuss ALL topics first and at end of week, I will probably send out an email link with a poll for each one so we can vote. Unlike past years, I honestly don't see an epic long discussion in the future for any of these. List of topics:
•Cost of league and league payouts
•Adding one more move per week OR increasing total moves per year
•Who pays last place fee?
•Adding a 4th keeper for 2013
•Keeper trade punishments
Topic 1 after the jump.
Topic 1: Cost of league & league payouts
Some have advocated we raise the stakes of the league. To quote one manager who proposed the change:
"Everyone seems to be big baseball fans and for the most part everyone seems active. However I am to believe we are all atleast 25 years old, so why is the payment into this league so small? What is it 50 bucks? I believe everyone should be able to shell out atleast $100 for a league like the one we do."
PROS: Higher payouts, more competitiveness, add a 3rd place prize (and possibly others).
CONS: Higher buy-in, possibly higher last place fee (?)
NOTE: 100 was just the proposed change, that can be debated in discussion if people like this idea. Please discuss this idea in the comments section and give your thoughts if you so choose.

I'm definitely all for a fee increase. I think we should have an active discussion and get some kind of consensus so it gets through the majority vote. It seems like, since we all have jobs now, that we could bump it up at least a little. I'd be OK with 100, I'd also be OK with like 80 if people think 100 is too high. Discuss away below though.
ReplyDeleteI'm in agreement. I will be voting YES to this, whatever we decide the increase should be. I am also in favor of a 3rd place prize. I'd also be in favor of a MANAGER OF THE YEAR prize as voted on by peers (adds a whole new dimension to league interaction and participation!!!)
DeleteAlso, I just noticed my DOBIES image is gone. What a bummer.
I'd be OK with a 3rd place prize but I think paying out 3 people is enough
ReplyDeleteI would have no objection to raising the league fee as outlined above.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that the last place fee should definitely stay to keep it competitive all season for all and not having anyone fold the tent and possibly benefit someone who gets that team on the schedule late.
As to the payouts, I have a slightly different twist. What if we paid each division winner with the fee back? Give some reward to the regular season and not have it go for naught with a bad playoff week? It would be cummulative with the prize pool for playoff's, so a team could win the playoff prize and the regular season prize as well.
Adding a 3rd place payout could work for me as well. Maybe the fee back?

Sweet, think I got my account to work.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything Cole said in the first post, so I will be voting yes.
If there is a fee increase, then I have no problems with adding a third place prize. However, if there isn't an increase I will not vote for that. I believe with the fee we currently have, the top prizes don't earn enough for us to take away from them to give to 3rd place finisher.
IF we vote against league increase-which I don't expect to happen-, AND vote for 3rd place prize, then I have another idea to throw around. Instead of taking a little off from all winners to give to third, we should instead only pay out the Presidents Trophy winner in place of both division winners. Then that payment that would be given to the 2nd division winner, would be awarded to the 3rd place finisher...But I don't think we will have to use this.
If it becomes a vote, I will be voting for last place of the PLAYOFFS for the last place fee. Would make those consolation matchups interesting, and even effect the FA list which as of now only is used by teams gunning for the championship.
Regular season division winners currently get paid in the current format we have.

ReplyDeletePlease wait for the relative topic to post your thoughts on last place fee and that discussion. Thank you.

So, let's see if we can start getting some kind of consensus on the fee increase, and then we can sort out the payouts. I think we should initiate an official vote as to whether we should increase the fee, just to see that it is universally accepted that we should increase it. Then, if that passes, we can start proposing the dollar amount increase and get a vote there.
ReplyDeleteSlow down there skippy. I'm the commish here. There have only been 4 people to say yes. This is one that would need AT LEAST 9 out of the 12, and I may even be inclined to make it a full majority because of the severity of the change.
DeleteThese are for discussion periods. Feel free to persuade, convince, etc., but there will be no official vote initiated.
I meant, we should start a vote to see if any change at all is wanted by the league instead of wasting time with coming up with a number that might not pass. If we can pass that majority or 9/12 want a change, then I think we can start voting on actual numbers. I don't think we could get 9/12 on a specific number unless we did it by trial and error, just my opinion though.
DeleteI'm in favor of higher buy-in, $100 seems resonable. But I believe just last year we increased the fee. Can we put some sort of term, for instance $100 for the next 3 years or we will continue to re-address this topic.
ReplyDeleteLet's continue to have four payouts but perhaps paying both divsion winners we change it to the best record and third place. This should keep a competive leauge while also have decent pay-outs.
I am in favor of the increased league buy out, amount TBD still. I do not think that we need to set any kind of firm timeline for when the league fee will be assessed again. I also am in disagreement about reallocating the division winner prize as I believe those 2 teams are indeed the most deserving teams in the entire league as, touching on jack's point, the division winners demonstrate endurance throughout the year in maintaining their record while the league champ wins, potentially due to good managing but also potentially due to his opponent having 2 bad weeks or a rash of injuries all at once.
ReplyDeleteI am also in favor of 3rd place receiving some, potentially all, of their money back. Of course it goes without saying that I am voting for the 3rd place prize to be retroactive to last year.
My fault Andy, saw Jack mention it earlier and I got excited.
ReplyDeleteI like to see that we all, so far, are in agreement to bump up the fee.
I dont want to see this fee go too high. I am comfortable with 80. I agree thay every 3 yrs we can re address. I think 1/2 the money back for third place is fair. We dont want to take too much out of the pot and that leaves incentive.
ReplyDeleteI think raising the fee is a reasonable thing to do after playing so many years and now multiple years with the keeper format. Since we've been at or below 50 so far, I think 75 or 80 represents an acceptable increase. However, I'm fine with 100 too if enough of us agree on that.
ReplyDeleteAs for the frequency with which we discuss an increase, I think it should be left open and be discussed during any given off-season. We shouldn't arbitrarily lock ourselves into every 3 years or something like that.
I think the 2 division champs should get more than just their money back since the division title is very difficult to win and any fantasy playoffs are often a crap shoot. Also, I think the 3rd place team deserves a prize but I could go either way on that one.
