Assessing the draft: Billy Ball

(Editor's note: This is the latest in a series of posts briefly breaking down each team's draft. It will culminate in the debut of the 2010 Power Rankings at the end.)

Will this be the year? That's what fans of Jack's squad are asking themselves. Talk-radio chatter this offseason has been all about his postseason failures and ability to win when it matters most. Will Jack be playing with a chip on his shoulder this year because of the pressure to win in the playoffs?

Focus: Hitting/pitching combination. This is usually Jack's focus during the draft, and this year was no different. He has a strong top-of-the line pitching staff with a top-notch closer. Jack had 70 HRs going into the draft, and he filled in the hitting holes with speed and average.

Storyline: Jack was locked into Jake Peavy, but we were unsure how he'd pencil him in. Is he the Cy Young winner he once was or a shell of that? While drafting, it appears Jack thinks Peavy will return to form since he wasn't overly concerned with loading up the pitching staff.

Headscratcher: Every year we get a note from Jack about how brutal he's been hit by injuries. Well, why did he draft so many injury-prone guys this year? Kuroda, Weeks, Francisco, and Bedard (and Peavy) all missed significant time last year. Roberts, Morrow, and Jenks are already banged up.
