Recapping a crazy Week 6 (UPDATE)

How can Rivalry Week top what we just saw?

Chances are, it won't. But I'm excited to see it try.

Let's take a quick look back on what we just saw happen during Week 6 - a week that featured three stars changing teams, some major smack talk, rainouts really hurting some teams, and some unbelievable Sunday drama.

A total of four matches weren't decided until the ninth inning of the Red Sox-Yankees game around Sunday night. In our five seasons, I can't ever remember that many matches up for grabs that late.

Shea vs. Hal
We start with the most exciting. Shea had no business even being in this, but Hal mindbogglingly benched all his pitchers on Saturday and Sunday (including Roy Halladay and a pitcher at home against the awful-hitting White Sox). Hal admitted he overmanaged, but as he said, better to be lucky than good. And after David Ortiz bailed Hal out with three hits on Sunday night to give him his first win, well, Papi might be getting a Hanukkah bonus this year.

Andy vs. Ken
The Match of the Week lived up to its billing, with a back-and-forth one. And on Sunday, after a truly disastrous day at the plate for Andy, it seemed he was out of it. Then Kevin Youkilis hit a three-run homer early in the Sunday night game, giving Andy new life. Alas, it was not meant to be, as he fell a TB, a HR, and 2 RBIs short of either tying or winning.

Jack vs. Bob
Bob took a big lead into Friday, but Joe's comments stirred the pot and maybe Jack found motivation there. He made a big comeback and got two late saves Sunday to hand Bob his first loss. Bob was the recipient of bad luck, as a starting pitcher and a couple of hitters got rained out. After further review, Bob is complaining on smack talk about being screwed just to complain. Jack actually lost a hitter Sunday, AS WELL AS a starting pitcher Win on Wednesday. Matt Harrison had a 7-0 lead in the fourth inning when OAK/TEX was rained out. (Wins and runs were two of the tied categories in this matchup.)

Chris vs. Rick
Yet another back-and-forth one throughout Sunday. Ricky was down a run and a stolen base with Brent Gardner heading into Sunday night. Chris benched Mark Teixeira, Adrian Gonzalez and Robinson Cano to secure he wouldn't lose strikeouts. But WHIP and wins were also close, so when Mariano Rivera entered the game in the ninth, Rick had life. But, Chris prevailed.

So many matches, so much drama! Feel free to add or correct anything I've said in the comments, as this is all off the top of my head.

  1. Gotta give a shout out to Ricky "Mr. Money" Spinks, thanks for benching a CG W on Saturday bud!

  2. I had two hitters with a rainout and one starting pitcher and was double-stiffed, I think I have a right to complain.

  3. Bob;

    Come on now - you stiffed as well (Romo, Narveson and Hafner, each of whom helped you). You lost one hitter spot on Sunday same as me. Your other Sunday rainout hitter you replaced with Tabata who had a hit, RBI and a steal, the latter of which almost got you a tie in that category if Weeks didn't steal two late.

    Good match, good coaching, and a tough loss.

    The rain hurt me as much as you (maybe more if you look back to my 7-0 lead with Harrison early in the week).

    Just trying to make sure the facts are out there properly as your team is very strong - and our squad fought hard to try to win. It was a VERY close match, could have went either way, but there were moves by both managers that were smart and helped each team.

    The stiffing and rain discussion diminishes a good match with good coaching on both sides.

  4. Narveson was my only stiff. I added Hafner and Romo out of necessity. Chapman got blown up for 3 runs in 0ip and that was his second blow up recently so I abandoned ship for someone more reliable. Same with picking up Hafner, I did it to improve my lineup. I didn't do it in order to eat up innings/wins at a critical time of the week. You won fair and square, it's part of the game, but I really only had one legit stiff and it was in responsed to you picking up Anibal Sanchez who started the day after. Just saying... I don't mean to diminish the matchup, just stating facts.

  5. Bob;

    Capuano was my only stiff. Same reason here with me picking up Sanchez, he is an improvement to my team and he is sticking for now. I dropped Harrison first before Wolf to pick Harrison back up if he cleared waivers which he did - but the Wolf spot was the one I was upgrading.

    I guess I see the facts very different relative to the rain and stiffing. It was a good match, right down to the wire.

    I had an eye on IP and W all along as a strategy to try to win once Wolf blew up again and I lost the Harrison outing - especially since my WHIP was already shot and your ERA was high - the metrics were right.

  6. not knocking the move, it was a good managerial move, you had me since I was forced to make moves to shore up my rp spot and my lineup, which has been ravaged with injuries. good win.
