The Mark Reynolds Debate

After I came out with the Midseason Awards, there were of course a few grumblings here or there about exclusions. Sure, that was to be expected.

One of them came from Bob, who thought his pickup of Mark Reynolds - or Joe's dropping of him - should have been considered for an award, or at the very least honorable mention.

"Did you know Mark Reynolds is rated as the 10th best fantasy player in Yahoo?" Bob asked me at the time.

I gave it a quick chuckle, didn't think much of it and went on with the rest of my day.

Bob didn't, though. He brought it up again Thursday night after Reynolds clubbed his 19th homer of the season, helping Bob to a 9-8 lead over Shea.

More after the jump.

"I think Mark Reynolds deserves an apology for not being considered in the worst drop, best pick up categories," Bob said Thursday. "He told me earlier that he's going to use that as motivation for the rest of the season."

Well OK then, look out league. But, let's revisit this for a couple minutes. Here are Reynolds' stats, going back to Tuesday when the awards came out: .267, 18 HR, 49 RBI, 98 K. Pretty darn good, for sure. But Edwin Jackson (Chris) won the award for best pick-up, with Chris Carpenter (Jack) and Jason Bartlett (Joe) as honorable mention. Hard to argue with any of them, especially Bartlett (.370 AVG/.988 OPS/14 SB currently) because of his position. So who gets the boot for Reynolds?

The worst drop is a little more debatable. I gave Tommy Hanson (Dave) the award because of his upside and promise, most notably his keeper potential on a team with an expiring contract. Matt Wieters (Adam) was on there because of his potential as well at such a limited position. The third one, Huston Street (Ken), is probably where Reynolds could have gone. Street's had a nice season, sure, but he hasn't been as valuable as Reynolds.

I guess if Reynolds is the reason Bob beats you one week you have me to blame!

So, with that said, what's everyone else think? Does Bob have a point? Who would you have put in there?

  1. Forget Mark Reynolds, how is Aaron Hill not on that list then?

  2. *21 HR's on Thursday, on pace for a 47 HR, 29 SB season, AVG isn't everything. His OPS is also .920 with 47 runs while being ranked the 8th best hitter and 12th overall in our Y! league. You also have to remember that we are talking about best pickup, so best pickup would entail how the guy has done since you picked him up and not past returns I would think. Bartlett is having a fine season but he was doing great even before Joe picked him up, also he was hurt for a month during the time Joe had him. A solid pickup indeed but he hasn't been nearly as good with all stats considered as Reynolds. Here are Reynolds stats in the 28 games since I picked him up: 20 runs, 9 HR, 28 RBI, 4 SB, 10BB/38K, .275/.347/.597 line. I rest my case.

  3. Yes, good points, but if you want to go stat for stat, I would think Bartlett takes more. R, H, K, SB, AVG, OPS. That, of course, is projecting in an extra month of stats.

Also, I still think the fact that Bartlett is a SS plays a big role here.

Also, in terms of pick-up value, Reynolds has always been a utility-type fantasy player. Bartlett's never been on a fantasy team, wasn't real known (like Reynolds) and is having a breakout year.

  4. Good points as well, I agree that had he played the full time the numbers would have been a lot closer but he didn't. Bartlett does have good value as a SS. The big thing with Reynolds this year is that he's always been like a .240 hitter that didn't steal since he got up but now hes batting in the .270s and is stealing more bases. Also Reynolds > Hill.

  5. Lets just keep this in mind guys.... Its the MID season awards. Because it is only the MIDDLE of the season.

Reynolds could easily be batting .240 by the end of the season and break the single season strike out record (which he might have set last year, not sure though). Bartlett could easily break his ankle and not play again. Or revert to his old sub par self and not have any power or speed whatsoever. We will have to see how this play out. I dropped Reynolds early on when he stunk. I couldn't play him he was striking out and batting .240. Sure he had the HR's but Arizona can't score (Look at my pride and joy Haren's record)RBIS werent there. I was playing the ultra hot Swisher (who i picked up) on the Nady injury who I also dropped eventually with a horrendous May.

Bob,it wasn't a good drop at all- I don't know if you can argue for the worst drop though given the circumstances. I mean I have Konerko, who I think you dropped. And he is batting .295 with 12 HR and 46 RBI. I mean not as good as Reynold's besides the AVG and the K's but not bad either.

  6. .305, 17, 54...and 46 runs, Aaron Hill for President!

  7. maybe Aaron Hill and Mark Reynolds can turn this economy around. Also, I didn't mind dropping Konerko, he's nothin special and was hitting well enough when I dropped him I just didn't like that he only played 1B and I needed someone to drop so I could stiff you that week, I actually ended up getting Reynolds with that roster spot haha.
