Dan Uggla stinks. Hal wishes he didn't keep him now. |
It was really interesting to look at this list and break it down. Frankly, there isn't a single team that has gotten keeper-esque production from all three guys. A lot of teams have had two spectacular keepers and one flat-out awful one.
Let's do it.
The original:
12. Joe (Tommy Hanson, Dan Haren, Victor Martinez)
11. Mike (Ian Kinsler, Jon Lester, Jered Weaver)
10. Ken (Bronson Arroyo, Carl Crawford, Cliff Lee)
9. Rick (Ichiro, Josh Johnson, Joe Mauer)
8. Adam (Josh Hamilton, Dustin Pedroia, David Price)
7. Andy (Matt Cain, Carlos Gonzalez, Kevin Youkilis)
6. Bob (Nelson Cruz, Cole Hamels, Ryan Zimmerman)
5. Dave (Ubaldo Jimenez, Matt Kemp, Evan Longoria)
4. Hal (Jose Bautista, Roy Halladay, Dan Uggla)
3. Shea (Miguel Cabrera, Felix Hernandez, Justin Morneau)
2. Chris (Robinson Cano, Adrian Gonzalez, Zack Greinke)
1. Jack (Chris Carpenter, Troy Tulowitzki, Joey Votto)
The new:
12. Rick (Previously 9th; Ichiro, Josh Johnson, Joe Mauer) - A .258 batting average for Ichiro. If he's not hitting, what good is he? Mauer has been injured, Johnson has been injured. What a disaster by Rick.
11. Ken (Previously 10th; Bronson Arroyo, Carl Crawford, Cliff Lee) - Arroyo has been absolutely horrible. Crawford has been better the past 30 days, but still nowhere near expected production. And, frankly, Lee has not been out of this world, either.
10. Adam (Previously 8th; Josh Hamilton, Dustin Pedroia, David Price) - Hamilton was hurt for six weeks and hasn't done squat since returning, Pedroia we all knew was a mistake keeping over Holliday, and Price has been nice but not the same as he was in 2010.
9. Dave (Previously 5th; Ubaldo Jimenez, Matt Kemp, Evan Longoria) - Yes, Kemp has been arguably the top fantasy player this season, but judged as a group, Jimenez and Longoria's struggles and injuries bring Dave's ranking down.
8. Andy (Previously 7th; Matt Cain, Carlos Gonzalez, Kevin Youkilis) - None of the three have been fantastic, none of the three have been downright bad. So we'll put Andy right near the middle of the pack.
7. Jack (Previously 1st; Chris Carpenter, Troy Tulowitzki, Joey Votto) - Possibly a bit controversial to have the preseason #1 this far down, but take a closer look. Votto has just nine homers, Tulowitzki was hitting .250 a week ago, and Carpenter is 1-6 with a 4.47 ERA. So, to sum up, Jack hasn't gotten the value we expected when we ranked him #1.
6. Bob (Previously 6th; Nelson Cruz, Cole Hamels, Ryan Zimmerman) - Hamels has been a stud, but I can't rank Bob any higher than this simply because of how much time he's lost between Cruz and Zimmerman.
5. Shea (Previously 3rd; Miguel Cabrera, Felix Hernandez, Justin Morneau) - Miggy has been Miggy, Felix has been more than servicable, and Morneau would be cut if he weren't a keeper (I truly believe that). So Shea gets bumped from #3 preseason to #5 now, basically solely because of Morneau.
4. Mike (Previously 11th; Ian Kinsler, Jon Lester, Jered Weaver) - Weaver has been flat-out fantastic and arguably the best fantasy pitcher this season. That alone propels Mike into the upper half since neither Kinsler nor Lester have been terrible.
3. Hal (Previously 4th; Jose Bautista, Roy Halladay, Dan Uggla) - Man, this was tough. How do you rank Hal given the vast difference from Halladay/Bautista to Uggla? Tough, tough, tough, but ultimately I decided that Bautista and Halladay are basically the only reasons Hal is in contention.
2. Chris (Previously 2nd; Robinson Cano, Adrian Gonzalez, Zack Greinke) - Greinke missed the first month but has been good for the most part since returning. Adrian Gonzalez will be the frontrunner to win the AL MVP, and Cano's production at 2B is better than just about all others.
1. Joe (Previously 12th; Tommy Hanson, Dan Haren, Victor Martinez) - Yep, I can't believe it, either. From worst to first for Joe. But look at what Hanson and Haren have done - two of the top 10 pitchers overall, let alone keepers. And Martinez has been a hitting machine.
All right, everyone, have at me. Rip me to shreds if you must, but at least provide your own lists and reasons if you do.

ReplyDeleteLooks pretty good. I expected to be lower cause Kinsler, but I guess this is about what we expected from him. Jared Weaver all day.
Who are the three of you who clicked 3-for-3????
ReplyDeleteMike Yiannakou
ReplyDeleteI clicked 3-3. I am very happy with what I have. Obvs Kinsler could get his batting average up for me, but I liked the 3-3 option more then the Happy for the most part option.
Andy - Nice job. I took a look at this, after thinking - even though Carpenter has been awful so far, I wouldn't trade my 3 keepers for anyone's 3 keepers. So I looked at this more in terms of cold hard stats. The outcome was pretty amazing - and definitely shows that the Commish was right on for the most part. There are some exceptions, but generally speaking he hit it.
ReplyDeleteI used Yahoo rankings, and totalled the rankings of the three keepers based upon Pre-Season Ranking, and Actual Rankings as of today. Here is what this yielded;
PRESEASON (after dash total ranking, followed by Commish Preseason Ranking):
1) Dave - 72 - 5
2) Shea - 79 - 3
3) Hal - 84 - 4
4) Chris - 87 - 2
5) Bob - 103 - 6
6) Jack - 114 - 1
7) Andy - 116 - 7
8) Adam - 128 - 8
9) Rick - 141 - 9
10) Mike - 148 - 11
11) Joe - 206 - 12
12) Ken - 322 - 10
ACTUAL YTD (after dash total ranking, followed by Commish Actual YTD Ranking):
1) Joe - 155 - 1
2) Mike - 212 - 4
3) Andy - 248 - 8
4) Chris - 259 - 2
5) Adam - 503 - 10
6) Hal - 885 - 3
7) Shea - 940 - 5
8) Jack - 941 - 7
9) Ken - 1,137 - 11
10) Bob - 1,146 - 6
11) Rick - 1,281 - 12
12) Dave - 1,303 - 9
Now, if you are saying the Actual Ranking are much higher than pre-season rankings you are exactly right. Most of the 30 keepers (21 to be exact) are ranking much worse than pre-season. The ones with the worst performances compared to pre-season ranking so far are;
1) Joe Mauer (50 vs. 1,088) - Rick
2) Ryan Zimmerman (18 vs. 987) - Bob
3) Dan Uggla (34 vs. 870) - Hal
Overall worst performances so far;
1) Joe Mauer - 1,088 - Rick
2) Ryan Zimmerman - 987 - Bob
3) Bronson Arroyo - 920 - Ken
On the plus side the overall best performers so far are;
1) Matt Kemp - 1 - Dave
2) Jose Bautista - 4 - Hal
3) Adrian Gonzalez - 5 - Chris
Last but not least, the biggest surprises - most improvement Actual vs. Pre-Season Rankings;
1) Jered Weaver (6 vs. 82) - Mike
2) Dan Haren (23 vs. 97) - Joe
3) Cole Hamels (9 vs. 59) - Bob
The moral of the story (with the actual rankings coming in so much higher than preseason for the keepers) "Don't believe the hype".
Again, good job Commish on this, you pretty much nailed it.

This gets my nomination for "Comment of the Year."
ReplyDeleteThanks for the analysis and statistical breakdown. Interesting to see the results, for sure.
Jack...did you quit your job? If so your time should be spent at Medford not doing this research!
ReplyDeleteShea;
ReplyDeleteI did not quit my job.
At 50 - we have learned an incredible abiltity to multi-task.
The truth is I did the research last night - was on an appointment this AM which the other side was really late for and I banged out the post on my Blackberry (was planning on posting it later today when I needed a break) in a lobby of a building.
As to spending more time in Medford - no doubt a great idea - add Brigantine to that mix as well.
Hope Wisconsin is treating you well. Multi-tasking is a good thing.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Andy, "Comment of the year".
